The Lekker story
Lekker was born out of passion for all things good: for food, for cheese and wine in particular! Since 2016, founder Gijs Opbroek, a Dutch national with a background in renewable energy and passion for food, found himself helping at local organic markets in his spare time. It is there that the partnership with local cheese-makers was forged; resulting in producing and marketing locally made Kenyan Gouda from the milk of Freisian heifers.
At the same time, Kenyan wine culture was in its infancy and finding quality wine at reasonable prices was a great challenge. So, Gijs and a friend embarked on setting up a premium wine import business. Lekker then became the first retailer of world-class wines imported by De Vries Africa Ventures.
The Lekker shop today is a wine, cheese and delicacies store that stocks a variety of gourmet products from both Kenyan and specialty makers from around the world. Lekker cheese is distributed to top restaurants, select green grocers and high-end hotels across Kenya and East Africa.
